Two Little Angels Asked Me One Question…

I recently visited my maternal grandparents’ house. Naturally, one place I really wanted to go back to was a Shiva temple I used to visit during every holiday as a child.

That temple holds so many memories for me like running barefoot around the temple corridors, stopping by the two Nandis sitting next to each other and whispering my little secrets into their ears…Standing outside under the tree with tiny sweet flowers (Magilam poo), patiently picking the dried ones that had fallen… and tasting them etc.,

On the stone flooring of the temple, there used to be carvings of games like pallanguli, aadu puli aatam… As a child, I would sit there and wonder, why are games carved inside a temple?

There came a day where I could not hold the curiosity anymore, I asked the priest, he smiled and said,"Those are for the Gods to play… they come at night after the temple closes."

I don’t know what I believed more, the answer or the magic behind it. But that stayed with me.

This time, when I visited, the temple had been renovated. The old stone flooring was replaced with tiles. But the pillars, the sanctum were untouched. Still holding the same energy, the same presence.

After darshan, I felt like offering something to my Divine. So I stepped out of the sannidhi, sat down with my eyes closed and began to sing.

I sang two songs for my God.

When I opened my eyes…

Two little girls were sitting right next to me. Looking at me with so much curiosity. Their forhead filled with 3 stripes of holy ash.

The first thing they asked me was:“Do you like God?”

I smiled and said,“No… I love God.”

Their faces lit up instantly.

They began sharing about their favourite Gods, their stories, their excitement and then one of them said, "We always wanted to sing for God in the temple like you… but we don’t know how to sing."

I told them,“He doesn’t need your perfection… He just needs your love and willingness.”

I asked them,"Do you want to try?"

At first, they hesitated. They were shy but agreed to sing along.

They slowly started repeating after me…Line by line… voice trembling…but with a big smile.  Together we offered- Damaru Bhaje song to our Divine

What an experience that was.

Later when I sat to reflect on what had happened in the temple, I realised that my Divine was reminding me again,

That devotion doesn’t need training. That connection doesn’t need perfection. All that was needed was an expression for that tender love!

Maybe…

The same temple where I once sat as a curious child…today brought two children to sit next to me.

And somewhere in between…the roles quietly inter changed. One common factor that all of shared was our love for God!
